The hotel is one of only 27 country house hotels that holds a four AA red star rating, and the only of its kind in Northumberland. The prestigious award goes to only the best country houses, offering impeccable service in an incredible setting.

A Northumberland Legacy

The beautiful architecture was designed by the highly-acclaimed John Dobson, along with Doxford Hall he was the architect who designed Newcastle Railway Station.

Novel Enthusiasts

Doxford Hall was completed in 1818, a year that is famously known for the publication of two Jane Austen novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

Famous Residents

Walter Runciman, was the 1st Viscount Runciman of Doxford and a prominent liberal in the early 1900s, he was a resident at Doxford Hall and now has their in-house restaurant named after him.

Hotel Grounds

The beautiful gardens surrounding Doxford Hall are incredibly well kept and offer a stunning opportunity for photos and the perfect chance for guests to relax and take in the day. Not only are they tranquil and peaceful, but the grounds also hold Europe’s largest yew tree maze.

Although the yew tree maze appears historic, it was actually planted by local school children to mark the millennium in 2000.

George Runciman was the talented man behind the hotel’s wood carvings and incredible staircase, which were commissioned for the grand opening of the hotel. At the time of completion and within the hotel’s first year, George celebrated his 80th birthday.

Charity

In 2010 the hotel changed ownership. The previous owner of the mansion, a philanthropist, donated all the proceeds to a cancer charity that he himself set up in order to help those who were suffering from the disease.

Wildlife

The north of England is known for being home to red squirrels, with their number decreasing it is wonderful to see that families of native red squirrels live in the grounds of Doxford Hall, enjoying the surrounding countryside.
