Spring is my favourite time of year. The clocks are pushed forward and there is promise in the air of longer, sunnier days. In gardens all around us colour is starting to appear – the bright yellow of the forsythia bushes, the trees laden with pink and white blossom, brightly coloured daffodils, tulips and hyacinths poking their sunny heads up from the ground… with this kind of backdrop it’s no wonder that spring brides get excited about the abundance of flowers and colours available to them at this time of year.

If you are planning a spring wedding, it is such an exciting time of year for flowers. In early spring the flower markets are full of buckets of:

·         tulips in bright pinks, oranges, yellows and reds

·         pretty anemones with their black centres and vibrant coloured petals

·         colourful rose like ranunculus with their soft layers of petals

·         zingy yellow daffodils and mimosa

·         Scented hyacinthsmascari and narcissus

With this range of flowers in season you have endless possibilities for your bridal bouquet if you are getting married in March/April. Whether you want to go pastel with a bouquet of soft pink ranunculus and tulips, bright and vibrant with clashing displays of tulips in oranges, pinks and yellows, or cool blue with hyacinths, anemones and mascara, there are plenty of flowers to choose from.

As spring moves in to late April, May and early June the flower markets begin to see an influx of flowers in shades of pinks, purples and blues, the colours more traditionally associated with summer flowers. Think:

·         fragrant stems of purple and white lilac

·         blousy fluffy full headed peonies in soft shades of pinks

·         sweet and fragrant  sweet peas

·         sturdy stocks in pinks, purples and lilacs

If you are getting married in late spring/early summer then think about bouquets of open-headed peonies, or mixing roses with sweet peas or lilac to create fragrant fresh bouquets with a hint of summer.

Finally, spring time would not be spring without mentioning Lily of the Valley. May is the time for Lily of the Valley and with its delicate bell shaped flowers and lovely scent, Lily of the Valley is the perfect bridal flower. If your budget does not stretch to a whole bouquet of Lily of the Valley (it is expensive even when it is in season) then think about mixing it with another flower, such as white avalanche roses, to create a simple elegant hand-tied bouquet.

Flowers do not have to be expensive if you stick to seasonal flowers and if you are lucky enough to be getting married in spring then you have plenty of flowers and colours to choose from.
