I proposed to Adam on New Year’s Day and we weren’t even going out with each other!I first went out with him in 1991 for a few months and we were madly in love. We even talked about getting engaged. Anyway, I went back to university and somehow our lives changed and I decided to end it.Over the years, we have been in touch on and off, but he has always been on my mind and it used to really hurt to imagine him with other women. He was always “My Adam”.On the few times that we did meet up/write, he always told me how much he loved me and I was so happy, but I was scared to go back to him in case I hurt him – I wanted to be sure that it was what I definitely wanted.Adam moved to America and I moved to Hong Kong three years ago and only a year ago, we started emailing each other. I was so pleased he wasn’t already married!Adam then suggested that we meet up at Christmas when we both went back to the UK to visit our parents. I was so nervous, but I had so enjoyed our email conversations that I was really excited about seeing him again.We met up for two days between Christmas and New Year and had a fantastic time – it was like we’d never been apart. I suddenly realised that I had always wanted to marry him. The timing had just been wrong before.On New Year’s Day, I invited him to my parents house for a drink and asked him to marry me. He was really calm and said, “Course I will”. I was so shocked at myself, I was shaking for the whole day!Our parents were so surprised as we had only spent two days together, but they are really happy and we both always knew there was no one else for us.It was really hard going back to Hong Kong and him to America, but we are now both moving back to London in April and starting our new lives.
