My boyfriend, Stuart, and I had been back together just over two years. We originally got together in 1997, but split for a few months at the end of 1999 (the best thing we ever did! It made us both realise how much we really did love each other!)
Anyway, I was getting itchy, "When are we going to get married Stu?"…"Why aren’t you ready to get married?" all the usual stuff- I’d even picked a ring I liked in the hope that he would propose soon!
We went to Zakynthos in Greece for our Summer Holiday in August of this year (2002), I was anxious, hoping that he was finally going to ask me. But after the first week, no proposal, so I resigned myself to the fact that he just wasn’t ready and began to enjoy what was left of my holiday.
On the Thursday, fifth of September, before we were due to fly back to London on the Sunday, while deciding what to wear for our evening out, Stuart had showered and changed (odd considering he normally leaves it ’til the last minute to get ready!), and then forced me into the shower and shut the door. Thinking that he just wanted to go out soon, I had a shower, put a towel around me, and went out of the bathroom, to find no Stuart. "Where are you?" I called to him. He replied that he was on the balcony. I went out to see what he was doing, to find candles lit on the table, and flowers (that he had picked for me the evening before, on our way back from dinner), and there he was. The moment I had been waiting for- Stuart on one knee holding an open ring box, with a sparkly something inside it.
"Vic" he said, "I love you." "I love you too," I replied, trying desperately to fight back the tears, that were already rolling down my cheeks. Then came the most magical words, I will never forget. "Will you marry me?" "Yes!!" I shouted, my hand trembling as he slid my new ring onto my finger. He got up and we hugged, and he kissed me our first kiss as an engaged couple.
I couldn’t believe it, I didn’t know what to say, I wanted to hold him, and not let him go. I couldn’t look at my new ring; it felt funny, as if it wasn’t supposed to be there, (I soon got used to it). Once we’d finally calmed down, and I’d got dressed for dinner (the proposal happened with me standing on the balcony draped in a towel – something else I will never forget). I rang my mum and gave her the good news. She was crying, and I was crying and then she made Stuart tell her how he proposed to her ‘little girl’.
That night Stuart took me out for dinner to my favourite restaurant, Zorba’s in Alykes Zakynthos- our first dinner as an engaged couple, and the start of the next chapter in our relationship, and in our lives.
