Tips for Compiling Your Wedding Gift List

What could be more exciting than making a list of presents you would love be given by friends and family? Surprisingly many couples don’t have a wedding list, yet most guests say they prefer to have some guidance. Here are the different options and some top tips to consider when compiling your gift list.

Gift list options

Even if you’re already living together and have everything you need, it’s still a good idea to have some kind of list to offer to your guests so they can give you something you actually want, to mark your special day. There are several options when it comes to compiling your wedding gift list depending on your situation and style:

  • a managed gift list with one department store
  • a managed list with a company that deals with a number of different stores
  • a honeymoon fund
  • donations to a chosen charity
  • gift vouchers or cash towards your honeymoon or home

Numbers

Once you’ve decided on the right gift list option for you, it’s time to decide exactly how many gifts to add to your list. As you will invite families and couples to your wedding it’s likely you will have most guests coming in twos or more so for a wedding with 100 guests you might only need to have 60-70 or so gifts for them to choose from.

Price ranges

It’s a good idea to add gifts in a broad range of prices so that guests can choose how much they spend. The average guest spends around £35 on a wedding gift, close family may spend more and work colleagues will usually spend less. Add a gift voucher option to your gift list for anyone who sees the list late and can’t find anything they would like to give you.

Practical gifts

Even if you have lived together for a number of years it’s still ok to add everyday items to your gift list such as a new kettle and toaster or furniture. Photo frames are a good addition to your list as you’re bound to have so many new wedding photos you’ll want to frame.

Keepsakes and heirlooms

Your family or close friends will want to give you something  to treasure for years to come so include an heirloom type of gift on the list.

Collectable artwork or sculpture will gain in value over the years and be admired in your home before being passed down the generations. Personalised gifts are also very special, recording the date and names or a unique message to create a very special keepsake.
