Styles and eras
Vintage is the name given to describe anything from a bygone era, and in terms of bridal jewellery it generally refers to the Victorian and Edwardian eras from the nineteenth and early 20th century right up to the 1920s-30s. These were particularly stylish eras, from the theatrical opulence of Victorian sets to the curvy feminine Art Nouveau style to more angular 1920s Art Deco styles typical of the 1920s and early 30s. Retro is a word usually used to describe anything that comes later, typically from the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

Original, bespoke or vintage-inspired
If you’d like to wear vintage but are not sure where to go or what your options are then it’s a good idea to check out a number of vintage shops before deciding. There are, surprisingly, a number of options open to you when it comes to buying ‘vintage’. Not everything known as vintage is old.

If you love the idea of wearing an original vintage piece that was worn by another bride many years ago then this is perfectly possible. There are a variety of shops and websites that specialise in original vintage jewellery. If you’d prefer something brand new but in the style then look for ‘vintage-inspired’ or, if you have the budget then have your own piece of bespoke vintage jewellery made for you.
