Every bride is unique, and so the planning of every detail of the wedding day is a reflection of her uniqueness. From the dress to the cake, to the make up, even down to the chair covers… they all reflect the bride’s own personal style. And the hairstyle is no exception – just as choosing the bridal gown needs careful consideration, so too does choosing how to style the hair for the wedding day. Camilla J Collins, professional hair and makeup artist, talks about what her brides are asking for this summer.
There are several things to consider and options to explore, not only which style you would be most comfortable with, but what style will compliment the dress and show off your hair colour and length in the best possible way. And then, of course, there’s the lovely addition of beautiful or sparkly hair accessories to consider…
So what is hot in bridal hairstyles for summer 2012? There is a new trend this year and it is very much of the braided variety! Last year we saw this creeping in, but it is getting ever increasingly popular for both bridesmaids and brides too!

2011 was relaxed with its Grecian curls, loose waves and half-up-half-down styles. This still is a very popular style for brides, but this year has taken on a more sassy and playful feel, with messy up-dos and some with plaits or braids running through. Gone are the rigid and severe bridal up-dos, making way for a much younger, softer and flirty feel to bridal hair.

Another trend also on the increase is that of the vintage look. This year’s brides are taking inspiration from the 1940‘s victory rolls, but mainly the demand is for styles taking inspiration from the 1920’s finger-waves, again another sign of the transition from a sculpted look to a softer and romantic one. As for hair accessories, fewer brides opting for tiaras and instead going for small accessories such as signature items belonging to friends or family, jewels or pearls scattered in the hair, or small flower designs.

Top advice, straight from the stylist – when looking at images of hair styles, always consider your type of hair compared to that in the picture. Create collages and mood boards, these are always great for us stylists to have a mull over to get a good idea of what you are after.
