According to our latest survey of over 2,000 brides and grooms-to-be, the advice of friends and family trumps wedding shows when it comes to wedding planning.
Keep it in the Family
In our recent survey, The Wedding Report 2015, we asked: Which of the following are you using to plan your wedding? Of 2,083 respondents, 71% said friends and family compared with 69% who cited attending wedding fairs and shows.
Bridal magazines, shows and fairs have been around for decades, but asking mum has always been the first port of call for most brides-to-be. And it seems that things have not changed much, as today’s brides still ask family for advice and help with their wedding planning before, or instead of, attending a local wedding fair or national bridal show.
The reason behind these statistics is likely to be due in part to the trend in DIY weddings, with many brides enlisting the help of family and close friends to make their wedding stationery, cake, table decorations and favours. This trend became more popular when the recession hit as a way to cut costs and has since become very fashionable. It is also worth noting that a visit to a wedding show will be a full day out with the added cost of tickets, travel and refreshments.
We also found that far more couples and their families are now using online resources compared to traditional print media. While just 61% of respondents told us they use wedding magazines, a huge 89% said they use online sites such as Confetti.co.uk when planning their wedding.
Wedding shows certainly offer brides inspiration but the real practical assistance from friends and family seems to be what today’s brides truly prize – along with free expert advice for all the bridal party from wedding sites like Confetti.co.uk.
