There is a lovely saying that ‘every bride is beautiful on her wedding day’ – and it’s true. There’s no woman more radiant than one about to marry, possibly because she’s spent weeks or months getting in shape for the event, having endless facials and manicures. Then finally her hair’s up and her makeup is picture-perfect; magic knickers on and she’s ready to step into her gown for her big day.

Bras for all shapes and sizes
Underwires and uplifters, bustiers or balconettes– there are so many options these days when it comes to bras. Voluptuous brides and curvier plus-size brides can now buy lingerie, nightwear and swimwear in cup sizes up to an impressive KK. It’s important to get professionally measured to ensure you are wearing the correct size. Most department stores and lingerie shops offer this service free of charge, so take advantage. Go for underwired, full-cup designs with pretty straps, avoiding strapless designs which offer little support. More petite brides in sizes from 30AA, should look for pretty padded bras with uplifting inserts to create a cleavage. Strapless and multi-way bras are ideal on petites who don’t need the support of shoulder straps. Padded and uplifting swimwear is available, some with natural feeling gel inserts and breast enhancers sometimes referred to as chicken fillets!
Magic knickers and more
The woman who is completely happy with her figure is a rare one, and most of us have at least one area we’d love to change. For curvy brides with lumps and bumps or a tummy they’d rather was flat, there is shapewear, also called control wear. They’ve come a long way since our grandma’s girdles. Super sculpting fabric magically evens out problem tummies by squeezing in your ‘sticky-outy bits’ and streamlining your shape beautifully.
Shapewear lingerie is made with control panels that hold in your tummy, waist or thighs to create a slimmer silhouette. They range from 3-in-1 briefs, which look like tight cycling shorts that come up above your waist and are designed to control your waist, tummy and thighs, to bodys that look like one-piece swimsuits and offer seamless under-wired support to the bust while ‘slenderising’ the waist, flattening the tummy and lifting and shaping the buttocks! Made from soft polyamide-elastane, circular knitted fabric offers ‘the height of textile technology.’
For under your bridal gown a magic slip is specially designed to provide extra support to slim the waist and lift the bottom, giving a perfect seamless finish under figure-hugging dresses and skirts. The waspie is an older invention that’s designed to nip in your waist and these days there are lacey and embroidered versions available, ideal under your bridal gown.
Just a note from one girl to another – although shapewear will make you look great in your bridal gown, it doesn’t look quite so attractive on its own… think Bridget Jones and the ‘magic knickers’ and get changed into something a little prettier for your wedding night!
