Going on holiday out of season can conjure up less than desirable images for some people; memories of windy, wet weather and closed restaurants spring to mind, but what if we said you could go out of season, yet still be bathed in glorious sunshine?
We spoke to Turquoise Holidays about what they call “secret seasons” – a rundown of where in the world is good to go and when, to make the most of low season and still have the sun-drenched, amazing holiday you dream of.
When to go to Malaysia to Save Money
If Malaysia is on your honeymoon wish list, head to Langkawi in March or April.
“It’s almost always sunny in March or April, with the occasional afternoon rains and thundershowers,” says Turquoise.
“These 99 magical islets off the western coast of Malaysia are almost deserted during March and April, meaning you have those emerald jungles and sugar-white sands all to yourselves and at significantly reduced prices… all because of a few short-lived showers!”
When to go to Mauritius to Save Money
Mauritius is an absolute hot spot for honeymoons, and with incredible infinity pools and bright blue oceans, we can see why. It does mean it’s rather pricey though.
Off peak in Mauritius is between May and July, when the weather it’s their winter and the weather is slightly cooler, but you’ll have the slice of paradise all to yourself.
When to go to the Caribbean to Save Money
Believe it or not, off peak in the Caribbean is between July and early September – right in the midst of the summer holidays!
The weather will be a mixture of sunshine and showers, which gives you an excuse to retreat into your luxury hotel room, or indulge in a massage at the spa.
When the sun is shining, you’re more likely to have the beaches to yourself, perfect for taking sensational sunset photos which you’ll treasure forever.
When to go to the Maldives to Save Money
The Maldives instantly comes to mind when anyone starts talking about honeymoons. With over the water villas dotted all around, it exudes luxury.

September is the beginning of the low season in the Maldives, with frequent showers, but that doesn’t make it any less magical. The average temperature is 27 degrees, and we can think of few things more romantic than sitting in your private hot tub watching the rain fall over paradise.
When to Visit South Africa to Save Money
South Africa is a popular honeymoon destination for couples looking for a slice of adventure. To save money on your South African honeymoon, visit in October.
“With the end of the dry season comes excellent game viewing with animals congregating at watering holes and babies being born all over the place,” say Turquoise.
“The coast offers perfect beach holidays and the tail end of the magnificent whale-viewing season in Hermanus and the Western Cape.”
When to Visit Bali to Save Money
No longer reserved for gap year travellers, Bali should 100% be on your honeymoon radar.
It’s got a bit of a reputation for being a hive for influencers in recent years, with horror stories of queues of people waiting in line to have their photos taken at iconic spots, but if you go to Bali in low season, between April in October, you should have a bit more breathing space.
Bali is prone to a lot of rain during the off season – tropical downpours that last 15- 45 minutes – so if you’re dreaming of a sun soaked honeymoon this won’t be the time for you to go. If you’re flexible with your itinerary, you can still see all that Bali has to offer – just make sure to pack a poncho!
