Greek Honeymoon: Your Complete Guide to Honeymoons in Greece

Blame Meryl Streep and Piers Brosnan for romanticising it if you want, but there’s no denying that Greece is a very popular honeymoon destination – even if you’re not an Abba fan.

But where to start when you’re looking for the best honeymoon destinations in Greece? Whether you want to soak up the sun in Santorini, sip cocktails in Mykonos or seek adventure in Crete, Greece is an amazing honeymoon destination.

Just imagining about those blue domes set against the twinkling Aegean Sea is enough to spark our inner travel bug – and that’s before we start thinking about the mouth-watering Greek salads.

Where to go in Greece on Honeymoon

There are 6,000 Greek islands, but only 227 are inhabited, making it a tiny bit easier to choose one. Kos and Zante (also known as Zakynthos) were the location of many fun-filled girls’ trips in our teens, but aren’t as popular as honeymoon destinations.

The main Greece honeymoon destinations are Santorini, Mykonos, Kefalonia and Crete. When it comes to the mainland, Athens is amazing for history lovers, and is a great jump point if you want to explore multiple islands.

Santorini Honeymoons

Chances are Santorini will have appeared on your Instagram feed a fair few times when you’ve been scrolling; picture whitewashed architecture set against dazzling sunsets, and you’ll have a pretty accurate image of Santorini in your mind.

It’s achingly glamorous on this popular island, and the coastline is dotted with infinity pools offering the most spectacular views you can imagine.

In the summer you can fly directly to Santorini from the UK, with a flight time of around three and a half hours. During the low season, you will most likely need to fly via Athens. Onwards flights to Santorini take about 45 minutes.

You can also reach Santorini by boat from Athens. This takes between six and nine hours, so not good for people who feel seasick, but it does offer breath taking views.

When to go to Santorini

If you want to feel like you own the island, head to Santorini in May. The weather is warm, and you can enjoy the streets of this charming island without the hordes of crowds that descend in high summer.

September is also a lovely time to visit; the weather is still gorgeous, and again, the crowds are starting to die down.

Mykonos Honeymoons

Mykonos is known as a bit of a party hot spot – but we’re talking classy, cliffside soirees rather than teens in matching tops. Think glasses of perfectly chilled rose enjoyed over views of the sea and you’ll be along the right lines.

For beach lovers there’s a perfect combination of secluded sandy coves and long stretches of golden beaches. Mykonos is also great for water sports – it’s known as the windy island, so wind surfers are in luck!

For people looking for quaint Grecian backdrops for their Instagram photos, head to Hora, AKA Mykonos Town, and lose yourself in winding streets lined with bright blossoms and cobbled pathways.

You can fly direct to Myknonos from the UK in about three and a half hours, or again, take a boat there from the mainland.

When to go to Mykonos

September is a great time to visit Mykonos, especially if you want to enjoy the nightlife without running into students on their summer break. The weather is warm but doesn’t reach the peaks of July and August, allowing you to roam the romantic streets without beads of sweat ruining your carefully curated honeymoon wardrobe.

Honeymoons in Crete

If you or your partner are history buffs, we doubt you’ll be able to resist the lure of Crete and its 4000 years of history. The largest of the Greek islands feels untouched by time and boasts countless charming towns just waiting to be explored.

It takes about three hours to fly from the UK to Crete, and as the biggest of the Greek islands, there’s plenty to explore and see while you’re there.

When to go to Crete

If you want to go on an out of season holiday, Crete starts to warm up from March. It’s the most southerly of the Greek islands, so gets warmer earlier, especially the south of the island.

October is another good time to visit Crete, with the local happy to embrace out of season tourists.

Honeymoons in Kefalonia

Millie Mackintosh and Hugo Taylor chose a combination of Crete and Kefalonia for their honeymoon in 2018, and if it’s good enough for reality TV royalty, it’s good enough for us.

Turquoise waters meet honey-hued sands on Kefalonia, making it one of the most picture perfect Greek islands, and that’s before you visit the rocky coves and beach-lined bays.

Similarly to the other Greek islands, Kefalonia takes just under three and a half hours to fly to from the UK. Flights from London go from May to September. Out of season you can catch a one hour flight from Athens.

When to go to Kefalonia

April to mid-May is the best time to visit Kefalonia. The temperature is between 20 and 25 degrees. Of course, if you’re a sun worshipper and your only wish from your honeymoon is a blissful week between the beach and the pool, June, July and August promise sizzling summer heat that you’ll love lounging in.
