The town of Spennymoor, and the villages of Byers Green, Kirk Merrington and Tudhoe, are in the North East of England, situated on high land above the south side of the Wear Valley between the City of Durham and Bishop Auckland.
The beauty spots of the North Pennines are within easy travelling distance, as are the busy commercial centre of Tyneside, Wearside and Teesside.
The township covers an area of 7,494 acres with a population of over 20,000. Since the end of World War II great changes have come to the town. Coal mining has ceased and the industry of the town has developed on industrial estates to provide a more diverse industrial base than ever before. The major employers in the town include Thorn Lighting and Durham County Council.
