About The Grosvenor Arms
The Grosvenor Arms
The Grosvenor Arms is a stylish coaching inn, found in the heart of the ancient hilltop town of Shaftesbury.
It’s a stunning property, a Georgian beauty though it roots are far older, dating back to medieval times when it was known as The Red Lion.
Restaurants are popular in Shaftesbury and thanks to our exec chef, Tom Blake, The Grosvenor Arms especially so. Tom was head chef at River Cottage and is famed for his network of local West Country growers and producers. He celebrates provenance and the seasons. His menus reflect this: all locally sourced, all traceable and, most importantly, the food tastes fabulous.
Shaftesbury is steeped in Saxon history. It was here that King Alfred built his great abbey. It’s the ‘Shaston’ of Thomas Hardy’s novels and we’re a stone’s throw from the famous Gold Hill which looks out over the beautiful Blackmore Vale. It’s a popular place to visit but good hotels are few and far between.
So, when, in the winter of 2016, after years of different ownership, The Grosvenor Arms landed safely in our hands, we knew exactly what to do with this local landmark. We’ve taken very good care of this much-loved treasure, updated where it’s been needed, refreshed and enhanced. There are 16 lovely bedrooms. The laid-back bar features sumptuous fabrics of midnight blue and green velvets, butter soft-leather banquettes and crystal lights. The charming restaurant has dreamy, muted grey tones. The Grosvenor Arms has elegance and style with a modern rusticity. Above everything it is welcoming and relaxed.
