As parents of the groom, there’s a lot you can do to help the big day run smoothly.
On the day itself just be there for your son, fetching and carrying anything he might need, (like a big mug of coffee, in bed, in the morning!).
Meet and greet
Make sure you get to the ceremony venue in plenty of time to help meet and greet your son’s guests, and then, if the couple are getting married in church, position yourself behind the best man and groom on the right of the aisle.
As the register is being signed, you will probably be requested to join the party to be witness to this, so be prepared to move. When departing the church it is traditional for the bride and groom’s parents to escort each other’s partners out of the church. To help when the photos are being taken, try to make sure all the guests involved are at hand.
At the party
At the reception you’ll join the receiving line to welcome guests. You can also help everything run smoothly by dancing with the guests and making introductions.
When the bride and groom leave, make sure transport has been booked for them and that they are able to get to their destination. At the end of the evening, you can make sure everything is cleared up and any outstanding bills are settled.
The next morning you’ll need to help transport any wedding gifts and deliver them safely to the couple’s house. Take time to write thank you letters to the bride’s parents for arranging a wonderful day, if they have hosted the wedding, and to the bride and groom if they have brought you a gift.
But the most important thing is to enjoy yourselves! This is your son’s wedding. Savour every moment and give yourself time to step back and take it all in.
