So You Think You Can’t Afford Your Dream Wedding?

Weddings are expensive and with the current economic climate, many couples may be putting off their big day in the belief they do not have enough funds to make their big day ‘special’. In this article, Life Coach Anthony Fleming discusses how you can gain a healthy financial mindset to prepare for your big day.

With many households worried about the security of their jobs, increased taxes, and the rising cost of living, it can be difficult to envisage that such a special day will ever be possible. There are several things that you can do to overcome these feelings – firstly, it is important that you get a clear picture in your mind of what a perfect wedding is for YOU (not others). Why? Because it’s your day and it needs to bring a huge smile to your face not only on the day, but in years to come and every time you think about it. Secondly, I want to help you to gain confidence in the knowledge that money can still be made and saved in these tough times, and gaining a healthy financial mindset can help you to realise your dream of that perfect wedding.

There are various ways in which you can start to change your financial mindset. Many of us have limited thoughts and beliefs towards money. For example, “I’d rather be healthy than rich” or “Rich people are selfish”. It is important to list these in order to recognise how ridiculous some of these beliefs really are. If you believe that wealthy people are selfish, then subconsciously you are sabotaging your desire to be rich as you would not want to become selfish? Equally, why can’t you be both healthy and rich? It is important to find opposing examples to help change your mindset. The power of the mind can be highly influential in our lives and can often be responsible for holding us back. Start today and change your life, boost your confidence and make a change to your circumstances.

The next important step to help change your financial mindset is to list ten things that you would do with extra money for your wedding. Here are a few suggestions to get you started. You could:

  • Hire a bigger or more prestigious venue
  • Invite more people to the sit down meal
  • Buy your dream wedding dress
  • Book a luxurious honeymoon somewhere exotic
  • Hire a more experienced, professional photographer
  • Hire a production company to make a video of your special day
  • Add additional tiers and decorations onto your wedding cake etc…

These personal reasons will energise you and will empower you to make those changes in order to make it happen.

I also recommend that you write empowering statements about money. For example, “I will have the money for the perfect wedding”, “I want to be healthy, rich and happy”, “Many rich people are very generous and donate large amounts of money to charity” and “There are many ways I can make money”. These statements will help to further empower you, especially when read repeatedly they can make a real difference to changing your financial mindset. Try to develop a love affair with money because the more you think about it, the more likely you are to make a change.

One of the most important steps to changing your financial mind set is to develop healthy habits towards money:

  • Save money whenever you can. Even small amounts saved can all help towards paying for the wedding. Even £10 per month adds up to £120 per year and if saved in the bank, you can also earn interest on this.
  • When shopping, spend more time looking at alternatives. For example, change to a supermarket’s own brand, look for special offers and multi-buys which can help you save towards your wedding costs.
  • Try to cut down on smoking or alcohol costs. Cutting back on cigarettes and alcohol can quickly make a difference to your cash flow and at approx. £5 per pack of cigarettes, it will soon enable you to save up for a pre-wedding spa treatment, or perhaps pay for a make-up artist on your big day. It will also make you feel healthier.
  • When purchasing bigger items, use the internet to compare and source the item cheaper. Many internet purchases can be cheaper than shopping in the high street, and every penny saved is extra money towards the wedding. You should also apply this technique when shopping for wedding items.

Lastly, educate yourself about money. This can be as simple as reading the financial sections in newspapers, which often gives advice on the best bank accounts to have (highest interest rates), zero interest credit cards (often for a limited period) and various other ways to help you make more money and save. You could also attend educational seminars to help you to develop a healthy financial mindset. Also, consider hiring a life coach to enable you to stay positive and empower you to make those positive changes. The more you engage with financial issues and financial education, the more likely you are to make a change.

Remember, despite the economic climate, it is still possible to earn money and have that big, special wedding. Changing your mindset and boosting your confidence may not happen overnight, but by making small changes as you go along, you will find yourself saving and making money that will help turn your dream day into a reality.
