Keith and I have been together for 6 years past in May, and it was on our anniversary that he proposed this year.
We are both teachers and so we had decided to go away somewhere on one of our holiday weekends (or rather Keith had decided and told me!). He organised the trip around March time, told me we were going somewhere for the weekend but not where, a big surprise.
Eventually the 25th of May arrived, and my boss at work – who found out the whole secret that day – let me leave early.
I had been quizzing my boyfriend for weeks, but still had no idea other than that it was a city break- essential information for packing clothes! Next thing I know I was on a flight from Edinburgh airport to Brussels, a very important place for us as I used to live there with my parents when we had first got together, and it had lots of memories for us.
I arrived in Brussels to find that Keith had booked us into a 5 star hotel, still I had no inkling. I was just completely excited at such a wonderful surprise and was hyper for the rest of the night. It seemed such a thoughtful thing to do as we had not been having such a good year with things to do with our jobs.
Anyway, we arrived at the hotel to find complimentary champagne and Belgian chocolates, which we quickly finished, got organised and went out on the town.
We went to all the old haunts, drank lots of Belgian beer and wine and had a great time. Around midnight Keith suggested that we get some drinks and go and sit in the Grande Place where everyone gathers to watch the world go by. We had done this many times before so it was perfect for old times sake, and for what Keith had planned.
Completely out of the blue, sitting on the cobbles of the square, he just asked me if I would marry him. I burst into tears as he had already bought my ring which fitted perfectly, a platinum diamond solitaire , and I couldn’t think a more perfect place for him to ask, and I had not even got a hint. Needless to say our families were very happy, and the most frequent comment from others was "about time too!"
So far I can say that it was the best day/weekend of my life, and that can only be overtaken by the day we get married and the rest of our life together.
We have not set an official date but we plan to get married in the summer of 2003. Definitely a very special story to tell to our children one day.
