How to make people laugh with a wedding speech

Making people giggle along with your wedding speech is easy when you know how

Let’s face it, nobody is that keen to stand up and make a speech in front of lots of people, let alone when they know the pressure is on to also make the crowd laugh!

If you are the groom, best man, father of the bride or another unwitting member of the wedding party that has been asked to give a speech though… you’ll have to have a darn good excuse or simply get on with it!

It really isn’t worth losing any sleep over though, because if you start by reading through our guide to making a wedding speech cast your eye over our selection of fabulous jokes for wedding speech, and more fabulous jokes for a wedding speech, then pick one or two you like, read our guide to working jokes into your speech and we guarantee you’ll have your guests laughing out loud!

Just remember that everyone is on YOUR side. They are just thrilled to bits they don’t have to get up and try to do a speech like you do… so they will be incredibly grateful you have got them off the hook and willing you to well.

Also keep in mind…

Be relaxed (even if you are pretending!)
Take a deep breath, relax and at least pretend you are enjoying it – we promise everyone else will relax then too.

Be tactful
Be sensitive. Try not to mention subjects that are bound to offend someone (particularly the bride) and steer clear of referring to previous partners, weight problems etc. If in doubt, leave it out!

Be brief
Even the best speech can become completely boring if it goes on too long. Just a few words spoken from the heart can be just as effective for wedding speech.

Be clear
Speak clearly. It doesn’t matter how great your material is if no one can make out what you’re saying.

It’s a good idea to take a calm, measured breath between each sentence and remember to stay slow. Public speakers always speed up as they speak and what to you sounds nice and slow may well come over at breakneck speed.

If you can, check out the venue beforehand. Get someone to stand at the back and make sure that you can be heard.

Be prepared
Practice makes perfect, so practice anywhere and everywhere. Recite your speech in the shower, on the bus, in the bath… the more you practice, the easier it will be on the night.
