Planning your wedding invitations

Probably the first thing you’ll sort out, once you’ve established a budget, drafted a guest list and decided on a style or theme, is your stationery. If you’re organising this yourself you’ll need to know what to send out and when. Confetti investigates.

Begin by deciding what you need

Considering the minimal cost it’s nice to have little wedding tags on your favours, name cards on your tables, and complementary save the date, RSVP cards, invitations and thank you cards. However you may decide you can forgo several of these options. Perhaps combine your invitations with an RSVP or use a table planner instead of individual name cards. These decisions shouldn’t be made on cost alone. If you are planning a wedding abroad you’ll need to send save the date cards as soon as possible, even before you’ve secured a venue (this could be six to twelve months before your wedding). You’ll have to make sure your guests can get time off work and move their schedules around – otherwise expect a sparsely attended wedding!

Gather information

An RSVP is a great way of gauging attendance and you should send them around the same time as your invitations. Remember that it won’t just be friends and family but everyone’s partners as well (and possibly children if they’re invited) so numbers can soon build up. Invite six or seven friends each and the same amount of family and you can soon find yourself catering for a wedding of sixty or more. Armed with RSVP’s you can start to plan catering, seating arrangements and the rest. Don’t forget to include a space for any particular dietary requirements: your guests may have religious, medical or ethical reasons for declining your beautifully planned menu.

Match a design to your theme

By now you should have a clear idea of the kind of style or theme you want for your wedding. No matter how particular you’ll probably find a matching stationery package that will suit both theme and colour palette. Confetti has a wide range of stationery themes that would complement vintage, seaside, rustic, classic, Parisian, 20’s, country, beach, winter and many more. When the invitations, signage, menu cards and venue decor all match up, your theme will have truly come alive.

Put the finishing touches on your invitations

Don’t forget to budget for embellishments and stationery frills. Wedding ribbon, tags, stick on jewels and intricate charms can all work towards your look. You could also consider decorating favours with charms, ribbons and tags to keep everything consistent.
